One of the questions I’m asked is: how to find a music teacher? One of the greatest lessons that I learned in college had nothing to do with college. And I wish I had known it before going in. It is that in the same way we are all different types of learners, people teach differently. By that I mean spatial, audible, visual. You have to find a teacher that matches your style of learning. You will notice this when you learn a lot very easily. That is a sign that your styles match. My advice is to ask that teacher to give you individual lessons. If they say yes, study with them until you know everything they do. Then find another teacher who has a lot to teach you. Eventually, you will not be able to find anyone else. Then you will find you are the one answering questions.
And the best teacher I have ever found has always been my local library. Particularly the Harold Washington Library.
Also there are many resources online today with great knowledge. Just Google or Youtube your questions and see where it goes. Remember to always ask several sources ( at least 5 ) to get a well-rounded understanding.
So, how to find a music teacher? For music, one way to get started is to look for someone around you who teaches your preferred instrument in the style you like. If you are into Jazz, don’t study with someone who teaches Classical. If you are into Punk Rock or Indie, don’t study with someone who teaches Flamenco. Find someone who teaches exactly what you are looking for. Preferably with experience in making a living at it. Also find someone who you really enjoy learning from. Because life is too short.
And never forget to ask questions: there is no harm in it as long as you find answers.
Best of luck. Remember: the day you stop learning is the day you start dying.
